Don’t put shoes back on before giving feet some TLC

Labor Day traditionally is the seasonal milestone when our thoughts turn to checking out the furnace, repairing the cracks in our homes, waxing the car and other chores associated with surviving a Chicago winter.

But what about taking time to “winterize” your feet?

Over the past few months they’ve developed calluses, cuts and cracks, blisters, bug bites and warts running barefoot at the beach and pool, working out on the golf course and tennis court, jogging on unforgiving pavement and hiking on rough terrain. Now it’s time to give them the Tender Loving Care they deserve.

If you’ve developed warts on your soles, hard calluses on your heels or a fungus under your toenails from a summer spent wearing flip flops and sandals or going barefoot in public places, you should take steps to relieve these painful pressure points. And do it before it’s time to switch to heavier and more restrictive shoes and boots.
That’s the advice of Dr. Ada Paolucci, president of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association. “Most of these conditions will respond to over-the-counter medications. But some of these sore spots such as a callused heel that crack and develops deep fissures that become infected can be especially dangerous for people with diabetes or compromised immune systems,” she said.
When that happens Paolucci recommends seeing a podiatrist who will perform a debridement to speed up the healing process. (Debridement is a surgical procedure in which all foreign debris and contaminants are removed from the infected fissure so that the remaining living tissue is exposed and can heal properly.)
